Enclosure

75-gallon minimum for one adult. 10 gallons per inch of shell length. Powerful filter essential. Basking area dry.

Temperature

Water: 75-80°F. Basking: 85-90°F. Thermostat for heater and lights. Separate heater for water.

Humidity

Aquatic but need basking area. Water pH: 6.0-8.0. Regular water changes (25-50% weekly). Good filtration essential.

Lighting

UVB 2.0 essential. 10-12 hours daily. Heat lamp for basking. Must replace UVB bulbs every 6-12 months.

Diet

Juveniles: 75% insects, 25% vegetables. Adults: 25% insects, 75% vegetables. Aquatic vegetation. Pellets supplementary.

Handling

Can be handled but prefer water. Short sessions acceptable. Watch for shell/skin infections. Regular examination.

Health

Shell rot from poor water quality. Respiratory infections common. Vitamin A deficiency possible. Vet care essential. Live 20-40+ years.
